i think you are right. this is a custom theme and maybe they modify the default mybb theme.
it looks awesome for me. i hope mybb 2.0 will have a theme look like this..
have you the theme look like this somewhere which i can download. because i like white mybb theme..

There was a very good white MyBB minimalistic theme made by Johnny S, but I'm afraid it is sold out with full copyright.
You can have a look at Audentio's 'Unova' or 'Go-Series'. They are really great white themes with very low price:
