MyTwitter Connect and MyFacebook Connect work in the same way: they check the avatar dimensions against the maximum dimensions allowed in your board's settings, and act dependently on its result: if width or height exceed the limits, maxwidth and maxheight values are used, otherwise the original image dimensions are used.
I'd check your settings to see if maxwidth and maxheight are set for avatars. MyFacebook Connect returns a small avatar by default thanks to the Facebook API, whilst Twitter API doesn't have this feature and returns the biggest image possible.
