Hello Folks, apologies if this is a numpty post
I have had a member of the forum I inherited PM'ing me this...
Quote:I have a request to make if you don't mind, it just involves clicking some webmaster server configuration buttons. It looks like your site is link bombing (mysite), there are 50,000+ links into my site: 38,000 to my home page and 14000 to my blog subscribe page! Thats quite the event Smilie
Looks like there is something configured wrong your end as it seems from Google webmaster that there are multiple versions of everything I have ever written reproduced in farsi, portuguese, you name it, is replicated many times over and linking into those 2 pages.
If you can rejig the buttons, it would be appreciated. I will give it a few days and see what Google robots make of the changes, and hopefully all reverts to a more logical state of play.
Forgive me not being able to see the wood for the trees here. But would anyone be kind enough to point me to where or what I ought to be looking at.
This guy has a few of his own links in his sig line pointing to where he is apparently getting bombed.
Best to you!
I'm not quite sure what that member is indicating or trying to say. Can you ask him to elaborate?
Thank you for replying, Arbaz. I'll PM him and get back here with a reply ASAP.
Thanks.
Edit to add: Would it help to give our forum url?
You might be compromised. What version are you running and can you list plugins? Plus have you viewed your sites source code to make sure nothing malicious has been inserted?
You should also ask the person if any special URL is in the referral.
Do you use any images from the guys site?
Hello folks and thanks for the posts/help.
If I may, I shall quickly post the chaps reply now and get back to you later today on the other pointers from you.
Quote:sorry, Im not a BB guru myself so best keep me away from your buttons.
All i know is that with the threads I have posted in, there is a link from my sig to the 2 urls on my site , as expected. But then every post is replicated in every language on earth, generating or contributing to these thousands of links.
So at a guess, the language duplication thing and the signature setup is where to start asking your BB forum buddies for tips.
Let me know if that gets any light shed.
Im finding that webmastering is not the funnest hobby at times either, but I suppose if it is made by man, it can all be mended by man.
I'm running 1.6.10.
I'll list plugins later today. Go to hit the sack now. Thanks a bunch for your help thus far!
Plugins currently activated:
- Advanced Sidebox
- Akismet (1.2.2) - This is not running at the moment.
- HTML in Posts (1.5)
- Login Password Conversion (1.0)
- My Advertisments (2.0.3)
- re-Captcha plugin (1.4)
- Registration Security Question 1.2)
- Stop forum Spam (1.4)
- Thank you Like System (1.5)
- Undo/Delete (1.2.1)
I don't recall him adding any images to our site but shall check on that one.
The urls he uses in his sig line lead to his website/subscribe to his blog by email/Twitter account.
Thanks very much for your help so far!
Do you folks have any other ideas on this situation?
If you haven't, not to worry and thanks for your input so far
Check your stats. Do you have a lot of visitors on your forum? If yes, is it in a normal range or not?
Example: 100 Members: 1,000 visitors daily = Suspicious
Also, can you ask the "Unknown" webmaster to provide some referral links? Because without that it would be slightly hard for us to help.
Thanks for holding on and being patient with my replies folks.
I've had a PM from the guy and here is a couple of links where he is getting the issue.
His:
http://www.painterspitstop.com/showthrea...ge=turkish
He is getting "&pid=21404&my_post_key=68adde5d57066e1992cee7ea197d8a0c&language=turkish" with all the other code after.
I also noticed this "mode=linear" within the url. Wondering why it would be showing that?
I only get
http://www.painterspitstop.com/showthread.php?tid=1732
If you need anymore of his links he's passed over, let me know. They are all pretty much the same.
Do you think it is because I have chosen our default language as English (British)?
I've also chosen "No" for the "Show Language Selector in Footer."
Do you happen to have multiple languages installed on your forum? Also, what your spiders/crawlers permissions? I mean what can they access and what can't they access? Oh and do you have a robots.txt file on the root of your forum directory?
To be honest, I have no idea what the solution is but I'm guessing Google is caching threads in different languages.
search the source code for link he is claiming is linking to him
src="http
and see if that returns any results to his site. it could be smilies or signatures or avatars, etc.
