I tried sending out a pm to my members and chose:

Message Type: *
Send via private message
Delivery Date: *
Deliver immediately

Yet it's not being sent out and if I visit Mass Mail I see my pm: Status: queued, Delivery Date: today.

Is there a config I've missed or why is pm clicked to send immediately held in queue?

I checked my pm and now it has been sent. It was only delayed with a few minutes.
Will pm's always be placed in queue and if so, for how long?

ACP -> Tools & Maintenance -> Task Manager -> Mass Mail. They are sent on next run (each 15 minutes, only if there is someone or a spider viewing your forum), you can make it shorter in options.
