I was reading an old thread and it was saying you can add 1-2 more rows of smileys in the left post box but I've checked though the settings and there is nothing there. Does this mean I need to edit the .php files?

Go to ACP>Configuration>Settings>Clickable Smilies and BB Code>No. of Smilie Cols to Show

You can change the number of columns there. If you want rows specifically and not columns then it will require a core edit.
