Would it be possible to add the Smarty template engine(http://smarty.net), and use that so making themes would be easier? We could use .tpl for template pages, and wouldn't have to worry about XML version being incompatible with mybb, as most templates I found, the version is never for the current version.
The template engine won't be changed in MyBB 1.8.

Which means some templates are not up-to-date. Another template engine wouldn't change that fact.

"Ignore version compatability" - which will possibly cause problems, but you can try it.
I think the current template system works great, especially for multi-hosts though I am a big fan of Smarty Smile.
I think the default template system is more than enough and great. It beats many other paid forum softwares system for the ease of use.

That as I like to maintain is the strongest point of MyBB.
Though Smarty looks good, I'd prefer the current system as it's easy to use.
