I am running version 1.4.1 and am now getting spammed. I downloaded a plugin recommended on here but it will only work with 1.6.1
I guess my question is, am I able to upgrade this on my own if I follow the instructions or do I need some specialist assistance. I am no longer a spring chicken, and don´t want to mess the forum up. Is it safe to try this alone?

You should be able to upgrade just fine, but you really should upgrade after every release. Your forum is vulnerable to a bunch of security issues and we haven't supported 1.4 in years.
Before upgrading, take a full backup of all of your files and your database. Then run the upgrade to MyBB 1.6.10. If it all goes pearshaped, just replace the files and db and try again. Shouldn't be too hard. The documentation is really good for MyBB.
Yes it is. But you should always backup your forums files and database before doing anything major like that. You definately should not be running 1.4. Also, don't just upgrade to 1.6.1, go all the way to 1.6.10 as 1.6.1 is no longer supported and probably has security problems.

Yes I am getting spammed. I will back everything up and follow all the steps laid down in here. Then keep my fingers crossed. Thank you all for replying, and wish me luck.
Better yet, backup and do a test install. If the test install works fine after testing everything, then backup again and do your live site.
Took the plunge and did the upgrade. I have a few issues that I need help with.
Most important is that I have lost my log in, log out tabs?
I have had a mail from someone saying they can´t get in, and I see that I can´t log out.
That would be an issue with the theme, you can temporarily revert to the default theme until you find a new one or find someone to upgrade your current theme
OK, here goes.
I decided to put back the original files and go back to 1.4 and try to upgrade again.
I now have my full forum in view but it wont let me log in, I get the following.
MyBB has experienced an internal SQL error and cannot continue.
SQL Error:
1054 - Unknown column 'remember' in 'field list'
Query:
SELECT uid,username,password,salt,loginkey,remember,coppauser FROM mybb_users WHERE username='resort' LIMIT 1
I read that this could be a plugin issue, if so should I delete all my plug ins?
Help would really be appreciated.
