I was looking at the template tables in the database and saw that the sid for the default templates are set to "-2". I can't find a reason why.

When I look at the _templatesets table, it says that the set id for the default templates is set to "1" So why are the others set to "-2"?

IIRC, -2 is the "Master" template set. These stay untouched by administrators so MyBB can compare changes between the Master template set and the template set your theme is using.
