No, there won't be an upgrade path. MyBB 1.8 is not production ready; using it now is highly inadvisable and can put your forum at risk. We also don't officially support MyBB 1.8 at this point so if features are broken or you download the code at a point that leaves your forum utterly unusable, you'd be on your own.
It's much safer to use 1.6 and upgrade when a stable version comes out.

Mhm. But I want that newer Avant theme.
Problem is, if I modify the theme now, chances are good I'll have to start again when 1.8 comes out so I won't miss any of the new features, right? Hence my question...
(For now, I only intend to use it for setting up everything so I can go live when 1.8 is released, so this would not be a problem for me.)
Maybe take this as a random request for an upgrade path.

You can install MyBB 1.8 locally and design your theme there. Things will be broken (The jQuery conversion isn't complete) but it's a much better idea than using it as a live forum.
MyBB 1.7 isn't actually a released version. 1.7 is 1.8 but 1.8 isn't 1.7.

Now that's confusing.
OK, thanks! I'll start with the "broken" version then.

make new theme in localhost (locally) using 18 alpha (1.7).
after you export the theme...
When 1.8 final released, you upgrade 1.6 serie to 1.8 and import the theme...

However isn't the Conversion to jQuery is still under progress so I think the theme is kinda buggy.
