I think it could be accomplished through PHP. Install the Template Conditionals plugin and ask for support on mybbhacks in the template conditionals sub-forum. Someone here would be able to help you, my statement is just an advise just in-case for future purposes.

for the side boxes, I'd suggest to use Advanced Side Box plugin - it has latest threads with Avatar module
