Guys please walk me through upgrading step by step.
I have plugins and I have modified forumdisplay.php

Note the changes/edits for your custom edits which you may have made to core files. Download the changed files package from below:

Do I have to deactivate plugins?

^ deactivating plugins is not necessary - however see this related issue
or better to wait a few days and upgrade later with a rectified file in the upgrade package

Deactivating plugins is just a precautionary advise. In all these years of experienced I had with MyBB, not a single time I had any problems with plugins being activated even through upgrade.

This is my first time so was a bit scary but as I already stated it went smooth
