So I know MyBB is open source, but that doesn't mean you guys can't earn a bit of income from all of the hard work you all put in. Here are my two ideas:

  • Requests/Services/Jobs - Recent post said you guys will be removing this forum, but how about instead is to make it a forum where you have to pay to post. This will generate a bit of income for MyBB and raise the quality of that forum.

  • Marketplace - I'll be honest, MyBB has normal themes that are the same and they're pretty boring, and MyBB has those rare awesome themes, like what Jordan L. creates. Perhaps some theme developers would be interested in having their themes in a official MyBB marketplace? Where myBB gets a small % of a purchase to help the development of MyBB.

I think MyBB development is slow, perhaps if there was a bit of income, you guys could do so much more.

That's not the point of R/S/J. I will not pay money to inform other users about a scammer. That should be free.

ShopMyBB much? I don't think it'll work. A third party one would be OK but MyBB should not be party to all transactions done through the forum. I believe the current rules of R/S/J is that MyBB is not responsible, and it should stay that way. Sounds mean, but if you get scammed it is technically your fault. Yes the person who scammed you scammed you, but you didn't do your research.

Scheduled releases ought to fix that. Wink

Someone paying to post an ad for a potential job, I believe the risk of a scammer goes down a lot. But perhaps a scam report section? Also I think whatever the point what R/S/J is doesn't matter anymore, since it's getting removed.

And the second one, well, it would be crazy to require people to only post in a MyBB marketplace, it would be optional, of course.

And I just looked at MyBBShop. The domain is down I believe, interesting idea though, I would love to see a gallery of the best themes instead of a gallery of every theme that's been made.

Scammers have money too. Wink I'll concede that one to you, well reasoned.

If my post came off as requiring people to only post in an official marketplace, I apologize. That was not my intention. I meant to say that MyBB should not be a party to it. An official marketplace implies that MyBB has some control over the contents; pirated content, rips, scams, etc would become MyBB's (partial) responsibility and of course, nobody wants that. Wink
MyBB is open source, as far as I see it, money isn't a huge problem here. Not all that expensive to run, either. Moving MyBB towards a money focus isn't the best idea IMO. Problems as said above may arise, MyBB should focus on development of the software itself, not things like a marketplace.
i wonder why mybb dont put any ads like adsense or sponsored ads here..

Since we don't a lot does come out of Chris's pocket so yes it is pretty expensive when you consider we're on 2(maybe one but I want to say two Toungue) dedicated servers. But, Chris has stood by this stance for basically the life of MyBB. There are some text-link-ads on the main site but that's all.

I don't expect it to change anytime soon either. Unless Chris falls on hard times which I don't think any of us want. You used to be able to donate but well Paypal is a bleeped word Toungue.

@OP: I don't see this happening at least not in the life the 1.x series personally. With 2.0 who knows we may take more of wordpress route but only time will tell.

Finding a way to earn a smallbit of money to help MyBB isn't really called "money focused", in my opinion. I'm talking about generating income so MyBB is stronger, with better servers, and a faster paced of development.
I don't see it leading to faster paced development unless it's a large enough amount to pay some of the devs for full time work.
not exactly full time but developing it 7-10 hours a day for 100$ (for example let's say 10 devs) will cost only three thousand dollars a month. Obviously , a dev will not get paid if s/he does not work. You guys earned more than 3 thousand dollars while purchasing MyBB.com at just two months...now your community is even bigger , almost a million users.
