I've read a few threads about issues when making the upgrade to 1.6.11 and that this has been fixed.
But on the download page there are no info about this and can't really find if it's safe to try to do this update now. So is it?

there is no security problem with the upgrade package. you can upgrade your forum
if there are any issues then post here so that someone provides required suggestions to solve them

just as a precaution, take backups of
database,
inc/settings.php file &
inc/config.php file
if you have any custom modifications in MyBB system files (eg. language files) then backup them.
turn your forum offline
upload MyBB 1.6.11 files (from full package) by
overwriting existing files
run upgrade script (visit your-forum-url/install/
upgrade.php and follow instructions)
