How can I preserve changes made to postbit in "post bit templates" when the next upgrade happens?

I've followed the directions on how to increase the avatar size:

by changing the postbit template and adding a line of code to global.css

Will the change to "postbit" be preserved? Or will it become lost if the forum is upgraded in the future?

It will be preserved in 1.6.x, not sure about 1.8. There you may need to adjust it with Find Updated Templates, depending if there will be any important code changes to avatar code, which I doubt.

as a precaution, one can take backup of the theme (export theme including the templates) and use it if required

I was hoping that there was a child-theme feature that would allow me to store and implement the postbit change separate from the template.

It looks like I'd better keep track of my changes outside of global.css
