I was wondering, what does it mean when a "Domain is Reserved".

I was looking up some domains and for one of the domains, it said that the domain is reserved. I thought someone has it and is looking forward to sell it so I looked at the Who.is and it showed no data, it either says "Error" or "Reserved Domain". I tried to visit the domain but it takes my to my internet providers search engine which in other words means the domain does not exist.
Many people reserves the same domains under different extensions e.g. if they already have DOMAIN.com then they reserve many famous extensions like DOMAIN.org, DOMAIN.net etc.
So reserved domains don't go for sale at all and who actually owns the reserved domain, the registrar or registrant?
I don't think people who registered or reserves those domains would sell them, because their main site has the same domain and if their company is registered/licensed then they wouldn't like to sell them at all.

And yes, these domains are reserved by registrants.
Thanks for the help Yaldaram.
