Hey guys,

I'm eddie. I am the owner of www.eddiekeyton.com and i used to run SMF. I used to swear by it. My forum has only been up for roughly a month, if that. SMF started going really slow, sometimes not loading at all. I was getting complaints about errors (DB errors). Then they started taking my VPS offline. My VPS is 8 cores with 10GB of ram lol. How is a forum with 50 members and 1,100 posts going to do that. Nope, it was the SMF coding doing it. So I then started searching. I wanted something that sort of resembled vBulletin because I like the way there forums are. Just don't have the money to buy something that expensive for a startup forum. I then saw mybb. I then asked myself, how the heck have I missed this amazing looking software for so many years? I installed a test copy, not intending to convert over. I then saw that we can use a script to convert from SMF > myBB. I had to give it a shot, just to see if it would work flawlessly. Low and behold it did everything I wanted it to. So I backed up my SMF, went in and deleted it after downloading my backup, then moved mybb into the root directory. I have been running it ever since. 3 days ago. OMG its so fast and smooth! My members love it, I love it. Thank you guys so much for creating such a piece of software and offering it to us for free! I love it, and will use it for the life of my forums!

edit: How do I get the announcement thing like on this site at the top, on the main forum page. The yellow and green announcements. Is there a mod for that?
Welcome to the community, Eddie. I am glad that you already have good memories with MyBB. I remember that I went through the pain of using both MyBB and phpBB (6 years ago) until I realized that MyBB is what I need... I made the right choice. By now I have several websites running MyBB.

As for the header announcements bar you can follow Matt.'s tutorial to create it: http://community.mybb.com/thread-40446.html
Welcome to the party.
Get a good theme.

For your query there are plugins and tutorials available for this very basic thing. Try a search

I honestly really like the default theme. I've found with other forum platforms it messes up your modifications switching themes. Is that true with myBB too? Where can I find 1.6.12 themes?

I just tried http://community.mybb.com/thread-40446.html that for the news block and it messed up my website. Had to revert back.

I just got the news thing working. Now how do I switch themes and transfer all of my mods over? If I can't transfer my mods, ill just stick with the default theme.
Welcome to MyBB, enjoy it Smile
You can easily change your theme, go to "Templates & Style" in your ACP, and click on the "Import a Theme" tab. It's pretty simple from there, just upload the theme. Upload images to Forum Root/images directory and activate the theme. Read this if its not clear

Its done Smile
I got the theme adding down pretty good. When i change themes though my plugins don't transfer over. Like my shoutbox, recent posts. news announcement. etc etc.
For your plugins to work just enable and disable those which are not working. Great thing you decided to move.
do you have any idea how to fix the facebook connect? It's not showing up when I install it for my users to login via facebook.

guess not
Welcome. The grass is greener on this side.
