What are some good things to consider when making a forum?

I had 2 MyBB forums I invested hundreds of dollars in over the last 3 years but they were my first forum projects and didn't succeed much. What do you usually go through to make sure you don't end up losing money or etc?
Content, content, content + promotion. The more content you have the offer the better your chances are to having a great forum. Once you have the content in place start promoting your forum. If it offers something that others don't, you should be fine.

Pick a niche that doesn't have 2000 different forums on the same subject. Example don't start a webmaster forum, it's been done over and over again. It's played out.

I once a forum with only one other competitor and doing what I stated above I ended up blowing past them in terms of posts/thread/members with 5 months. Not easy but if you care about the subject it really helps keep you focused on it Smile.

Hope that helps.
