is there anyway that i can highlight the subroom names on the main index page when there is a new post in that room.

If you see the subforums on the index page of this forum, you'll see that there are blue and grey dots beside the subforum name indicating whether or not there are new posts.

To enable this functionality: Admin CP --> Settings --> Forum Home Options. Enable the "Show Subforum Status Icons?" setting
