When doing a search, you get a list of threads that contains the term, instead of a list of posts.

Is it because a thread may contain the term 100 times, so rather than list the hundred posts, it lists the thread in which it was mentioned?

I think you can choose if you want the results displayed as threads or posts? Thread is default.

What Leefish said. Look bottom right of the search page and you will see "Display Options" tick Show results as Posts.
