OP you should honnestly stay away from a vps, unless your absolute sure you know what you're doing. Their are tons more vulnerabilities. Think about your computer, and you're hosting a server. What happens when you host a server? Everyone has access too your computer, and if it's not updated to patch these vulnerabilities anyone can access it. 1 example of this is called the heartbleed bug.
Also start a new forum & database and don't use any files from the previous server. The hacker most likely shelled the site to get access to the admin pannel.
