Editing against rude language in reputation comments would be nice, we do currently edit the database directly to do that.

If you do that your PR will end up as closed.
Method as I have figured so far:
1. You have to make a suggestion here at community forums.
2. If major feedback comes as positive and / or staff decides to take it forward to repository then a staff will copy your thread's content with a link to your actual thread and make an 'Issue' at GitHub.
3. Then only you can start working on a PR referring to the 'issue' created by the staff.
Else (I dare writing this) you may face situations you don't like at all ...
Of course - I know rules for controbuting - it is up to mybb devs.
Now they have a lot of work with 1.8.0 release so after that there will be time for discussion, at least I hope
