What I want to be able to do is stop search engines from following external links placed in posts. But I would also like to make a couple of exceptions to this rule. Does this get done in the robots.txt file ? If so what do I put in it ?

Another thing that I would like to be able to do is slightly reduce the size that videos from YouTube etc display, so that I can place two side by side.
You are going to use is nofollow

This one will probably be the best one

http://mods.mybb.com/view/nofollowexternal

but also
http://mods.mybb.com/view/nofollow-in-specific-forums

and

http://mods.mybb.com/view/nofollow-signatures

may work as well.

a nofollow tag within a hyperlink tells a search engine not to follow it and not to give the link ranking weight
and for your second query, goto Ungrouped Templates and there you can find the templates for each video hosts. you can change the width and height of videos from there...
You don't need a plugin for nofollow signatures. It is under ACP->Users & Groups->Groups->Group Name->Users & Permissions.

I cant find users and permissions on any group setting ?
I have just installed the nofollow plug in, would that be the reason ?

I have installed this ... http://mods.mybb.com/view/nofollowexternal ... and thought that all was ok. But, just a short while ago I visited my forum and saw a whole page of error messages relating to this plugin. I disabled it and all looks fine again ?

Thanks for this info ! But, the object of the exercise was to be able to place two videos side by side, but I am still unable to do this even though I have reduced the default size so that they will fit. It works with images, so why not videos ?
