I was wondering what this was and how they did it. I know for sure they are using mybb??

Are you sure that will do that im not to keen on installing plugins on my forum.

yes it will. alternatively you can "Enable search engine friendly URLs" from ACP >> Configuration >> Server and Optimization Options

enabling it will change the thread links from showthread.php?tid=1 to thread-1.html. you don't need a plugin for this.
