My forum is set to admin validation so they don't even get in to spam without my approval. While they IP didn't show in any spam database the user name did. So I banned it, then deleted it which usually means they disappear as the newest registrant. This time they are still there but not in the member list.

Try using "recount and rebuild" tool ACP
