I noticed in vBulletin it shows in parentheses (14 viewing) to the right of the forum name, is this possible in MyBB natively?

yes its there in ACP >> Configuration >> Forum Home Options. >> Show x viewing forum

also you have options to show Users Browsing this Forum and Users Browsing this Thread in Forum Display and Show Thread options
