I have recently wrote a plugin for inline moderation, There I had to display user selected Post Numbers (In relation to thread) And I had to go a long way for this i.e writing javascript and passing hidden variables finally creating an array out of it then joining it to Post ID's etc,
wouldn't it be better if there is a field in mybb_posts table for Post Number?

No, because the post number as shown in the postbit is sequential and it changes as things are deleted. if you notice the PID is what is actually in the link that the postnum references.
