Is it possible for each user to have individual themes on the index ? (not the default one)
They can just change the theme in their User CP -> Edit Options -> Board Style:
yes I know that, but when the theme is switched, it will only change when browsing through the forums (not the actual index.php home page)...

I think that's due a bug in some people's global.php files or something. There was a topic in the Bug Forum IIRC, so try searching there.

This was a bug in MyBB 1.2.2. It's been fixed for 1.2.3
