Do you think phpBB 3.1 will be better than MyBB 1.8?
earlier discussion for reference => phpBB 3.1 thoughts
It's one of those "too little, too late" situations.
I have never thought of phpBB as a MyBB competitor. Not one which can actually compete, at least. At most, they have a much larger community, but they're losing a fair bit of marketshare according to some statistics which is really the only thing which they have.

Originally, I had a higher opinion of phpBB 3.1, as I'm all for more competition but then, I realized that it wasn't that great, as it's something which they should have done.. Many years ago.
While MyBB was pushing out 1.4, 1.6, etc.. phpBB was doing nothing.

MyBB might have overhyped 2.0, but if phpBB's going to take this long to do anything then, they're as good as finished.
I left phpBB after they released 2.0.6 and ran with MyBB and haven't looked back. I think the only thing missing from MyBB 1.8 that is in phpBB3.1 is the responsive front-end/ACP design. Over all phpBB3.1 is still not something i'll run on my server.

MyBB is still the king of the free forums.
The biggest nice thing about phpBB is that one of the mods allows integration with Wordpress.
If that was possible in MyBB then, that would be a huge boost to MyBB's usefulness.
Having read this:

I wouldn't bother surfing that area. Ha!

Of course, this is my personal opinion.
To be honest, one of the main reasons why phpBB is even still relevant is probably since most of the significant advances which MyBB has over phpBB are in the moderation and administration area which you don't usually see unless, you actually moderate / administrate a MyBB Forum.

If MyBB was obviously significantly superior to phpBB from a user perspective (which is how most people would see it) then, MyBB would have a much bigger marketshare and more people would be developing plugins for it thus, leading to that Wordpress Integrator which loads of people want. I considered writing one before, but I'd prefer to see who comes out on top in the whole next generation thing.

its possible easily with mybb and wordpress with existing tools

My visual and user integration is fully automated

check my site if you want to see it in action. I am finishing packaging it up to release it but it will likley be a paid plugin

Based on that reading, there is no way I'd try and develop plugins for PHPBB for free. They make things nice and difficult to achieve. I certainly would charge more than what I currently charge for custom plugins here.

I also didn't really care for PHPBB a long time ago when I tested it out to see what it was like.

If I stick around with MyBB 2.0 then, I will probably release Wordpress Integration as a free plugin.
Good to see that someone is doing a plugin for that though.

I actually tried phpBB3 again fairly recently. Basically, I saw that it had some extremely good Wordpress Integration and so, I figured.. How bad could this be?
At first, it looked alright until, I tried to do moderation and administration. Oh goodness, is it outdated.
In the end, I just said screw it and converted it to MyBB.
