i'm not sure this is a bug ... but in mybb.com (X% of PM space used) not shown. i test it on beta 3 and no issue.

IIRC, no space limit restrictions were put on user's PM usage (unlimited quota)

but with 1.8 new feature (Instant PM Notification) I'm suggest for avoiding the database size ... limit the message quota. Heart
