What does this mean? MyBB needs to resolvea host name? Can it be avoided?

That's nothing to do with us, you should contact your hosting support about that error.

It means it can't resolve the IP address of the database host you indicated in config.php.

You could try putting 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost to see if that fixes the issue.
