Instead of language variable isn't it better to put a reply icon?
Icon can avoid handling variety of languages as well as different opinions about the abbreviations.
Something like:

If the reply subject is modified the icon can still be there logically as its a reply, but "RE:" can be removed by the user, so whats the point placing that and struggling with fixing of reply message max-char error playing childhood maths in PHP!!!
But now its in tooltip. So possibilities for the above is limited.
