First i wanna congratulate you for 1.8.0. But, if we look at other forum softwares, most of them have a stable alerts system. For mybb, there is a plugin for it but actually, plugins are not working as stable as the core features. So, in 2.0 we want an alerts system in our software (i guess most of forum owners want this).

It's likely MyBB 2.0 will have a notification/alert system. It's certainly a feature I will be pushing for.

I hope it's optional, meaning we can toggle it off and on. Because I most certainly do not want it enabled.

It really depends on how it's implemented and how frequently it polls the server.
I've seen people get suspended on shared hosts before for having too aggressive AJAX reloading.
Alerts != AJAX. There will of course be a setting @weBex.

Oh, I assumed that it would be one of the ones which occasionally calls home for new updates.

You don't actually need ajax, it can be reloaded as page reloads. However, it would be nice to be dynamic (no-need to reload, i mean).

I'd love Alerts to have features or be easy for developers to add on to it. Features I'd love:
- Subscribe to forum/thread alerts
- Alerts when post is liked (like how it is with SimpleLikes)
- Alert when mentioned (if @tags are added, or with plugin)
- Push custom alerts for groups or everyone at once
- Alert when post is quoted.
- Alert when added to buddy list (but not ignore list)
- No Alerts given if tagged in a board you cannot access.
