As a note, I was able to update my PHP to 5.4 and this did seem to solve the problem.
The symptom is insidiously silent however, one simply stops receiving new members. We have been running that way for about a week without having known it. The sfs_log.php does not seem to be updated although the Error_log is.
We receive so many spam attacks that we would probably opt to manual screening rather than simply turn off stopforumspam even had we known.
