What I would like to see is a plugin that gives a user a notification when his/hers name is mentioned in a discussion.
Might be something like @username 
and when you type @ on a reply, maybe you could get a search box for the user.

have you seen MentionMe for MyBB 1.6 (update will be available for MyBB 1.8)

Or for 1.8 you can use DVZ Mentions: http://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=29 But they require PHP 5.4+..
