I have tried this with MyBB 1.6 and 1.8 and I get the same 404 error each time.
When I click on a categor or board from the home page I get 404'd
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Try disabling SEO URLs.

ACP > Configuration > Server and Optimization Options > Enable search engine friendly URLs? > Disabled

Or try renaming "htaccess.txt" to ".htaccess".

Renaming htaccess worked perfectly. I guess things like this vary host-to-host.
