When creating icons or sprite images, mind the transparency as well.
So set an Alpha channel for a transparent background color if neccessary.
Most beneficial file format for pixel-based icons and transparent sprite images is either PNG
or GIF (both ready for lossless compression).
Don't use JPG for icons and never use BMP for online publications.
