Was wondering, is there a way I can setup the forum so when I hover over a thread a pop up box appears with a para of the thread.  This way I can quickly filter what I want to see or not without actually opening the thread.

There isn't a plugin for 1.8 that I know of, however, for the 1.6 series I had written this: http://mods.mybb.com/view/thread-preview. You can try changing the compatibility line to 18*.
