I believe that 1.6 had only the Search link in the same row as Member List, Calendar, etc. Testing 1.8 (only locally so far) I also see a Search box like the one here top right of page. Is there a setting to remove it or does it require editing files? Thanks

You need to edit the header template to remove the search box.. "{$quicksearch}" is what you need to remove from the header...
