before we upgrade 
our latest thread in portal page used to have the username with the usergroup color
after the upgrade the usergroup color is not display any more
how to bring it back

Try the attached modified portal.php - this file based on MyBB 1.8.3.

Copy the modified version in forum root at server and replace the original portal.php.
