Yup, I used the second method and it worked. Thanks for yor help! The post icons came back without problems.
Getting the smilies to work was a little more work. I changed *.gif to *.png from my forum's database using phpMyAdmin. Using this method I simply could select all the smilies by selecting them first and clicking on edit. Now i could change all the extensions in 1 query, plus I could give them a "Display Order" number which is obligatory.
Also I had to change the extensions from *.gif to *.png from table=mybb_datacache value= smilies (using a text editor to replace all the extensions at once).
