You have installed an incompatible / old custom theme. Your custom theme's Javescript is conflicting with default javascript of MyBB. that is why you can not see editor and your text box is small. If you change your theme to default, you will see you can use these editor button. So better is to install a compatible theme for MyBB 1.8
