I installed MyBB just fine, but afterwards I get nasty garbled characters on the forum home. I can log in to the admin cp. I've search this forum as well as in the wiki and asked for help in irc with no help.

Can you login into Admin CP? Try disabling GZIP compression in settings, if it's enabled.

Yes, this would indeed be a problem with GZIP compression.
