Hello to all mybb developer,

After posting a suggestion for mybb 2.0 development : http://community.mybb.com/thread-164653-...27722.html

I feel happy if my auto update features release in mybb 1.8.x series.

Today my topic is Shorten URL

These day every one providing this features shorten url.

If mybb forums provide shorten url features for mybb thread long url to shorten url like : mybb.in/shortenurl, mybb.ly/shortenurl .

It automatic create a shorten mybb threal url for every mybb thread long link.

Blue print for shorten your :

mybb thread your [http://community.mybb.com/thread-164653-...27722.html] to mybb shorten url something like this [http://mybb.in/xyz] or [http://mybb.ly/xyz] or any thing.

Examples :

1. wordpress

wordpess long url [http://googiehost.com/blog/really-understand-google/] to shorten url [http://wp.me/p4TwNk-4w]

2. speedyshare.com

speedyshare long url [http://www.speedyshare.com/wY7n6/RRS-HOST.png] to shorten url [http://speedy.sh/wY7n6/RRS-HOST.png]

3. Facebook

Facebook long url [https://www.facebook.com/FanofRRS] to [http://fb.me/fanofrrs]
MyBB doesn't have the infrastructure or resources to build and maintain a URL shortener. Wordpress, Speedy Share, and Facebook are all companies which have funding and paid employees. If you need to use a URL shortener, use bit.ly or something proven. I can say with confidence this won't be happening.
@Nathan Malcolm.

i know.

but when come to wordpress. it totally free officially. but there are providing.

and it not hard. mybb need to create a domain name and they need to script a shorten url integrate with mybb forum software.

that make shorten url for all mybb thread post. then user types shorten url it will redirect to original url.

Wordpress is a company. They have millions of dollars in funding - tens of millions. Wordpress is free, and so is MyBB, but MyBB has no funding. No donations, no ad revenue, nothing.

If you think it's as easy as creating a domain and a URL shortener script, you're wrong. The amount of bandwidth and resources needed would be insane. And for what? To have a MyBB branded URL shortener? It wouldn't bring in any revenue and it would cost a lot of money to maintain -- with a small, volunteer group where people come and go every few months. It's not possible and, as I said before, I can say with confidence this won't be happening.
If mybb developer try, then it possible.

Again i am saying it not too hard. domain name cost is not so high and shorten url does not takes more bandwidth or disk space.

and this script is going to run in mybb user server, not in mybb official server.

MYBB developed more features in forum. then shorten is very small feature.

I like to see thiS features in mybb next version. and i hope many of mybb FAN'S and user like to see this features in mybb next version .

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN WORLD

Then why don't you implement it yourself via a plugin?
It doesn't cost much as you said urself.

@Nathan, bandwidth isn't much of a problem (Coming from one who uses about 86 TB a month in total), Resources is a bit eeeh as it could be made in GoLang or something actually useful thus not requiring much.
But then again, it is as you self say... Useless to make.
if mybb ready to develop this feature i am ready to provide domain name and bandwidth.

bit.ly one of the famous site. they use bandwidth about 600GB per month only.

Ok if you are so sure, can you give me a source of your so called "600 GB per month"?

Anyone can slap a script on a vps or shared hosting that's not the case, the case is the abuse reports, maintenance in the long run, uselessness of it even being in the source and so on which I don't think you are getting.
Ha ha ha ha. Bit.ly is famous so it need 600GB bandwidth per month . but mybb going to release new. So for mybb 100GB is too much if it became popular we can upgrade. I am ready to provide bandwidth with 600 GB also. But I need a confirm from mybb developer and admin.

Please don't just pull numbers out of thin air. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. You talk about two different ideas -- a central URL shortener and a self hosted URL shortener. You think that it's just as simple as putting up a URL shortener and throwing bandwidth at it. That's not how it works. MyBB is a volunteer project which costs a lot of money to run. There isn't a single person who works on MyBB full time. Server access is limited to a certain few (possibly still just Chris). Attacks are frequent (read: constant) and time has been spent minimizing the potential attack surface over the years. Downtime is often and takes time to recover. These are all reasons why this isn't possible.

I've been on the team and I know the issues which MyBB faces. Time needs to be spent on supporting users, fixing bugs, and getting the next release out there.
