I want to show who is was online today, user groups on the index page. 

usergroup can be done without a plugin: http://community.mybb.com/post-894009.html
(its a old tut but can work in 1.8)

online today requires a plugin, not sure whether this works: http://mods.mybb.com/view/online-today-1.2.2

Well above method did only work for legends but not for who has been online today.
see this forum http://adminads.com it has feature of who has been online today, how can i have something like this?

i just now tested it and the plugin works fine... and the site you mentioned is using the same plugin which I have suggested...

btw, did you change the compatibility line in the plugin file...
