Interesting for me too. There are many other plugins I use in 1.6 and because of that I am not able to upgrade.
It's so frustrating that there's such an obvious need for a decent Newsletter plugin that isn't just mass mail, but that can be scheduled weekly/monthly to send out things like a custom message followed by variables like recent and most replied to thread as well as new members and so on.
I find it strange that no such feature exists.
