when i use firefox this character appears instead of image

That's probably because custom icon fonts with theme is incorrectly setup.

Try another web browser, or clear cache maybe. Or the problem is your 1.6 theme which you try edit to 1.8

Seems like fonts aren't loading, I guess that things are "Font Awesome" icons.

Add this to theme headerinclude template:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.3.0/css/font-awesome.min.css" />
