I release because i use on my site and have to stay with some plugins and testing it i fix all errors on 1.6.x versions and there are for free.
But now i have to make all by myself tests and repair of bugs and search for it and change all code to make works on MyBB 1.8.x series.
But i have a free version for Thanks system with the hide until thanks improvement, this is working since 2011 where i came up to MyBB and make own versions on my forum, then my forums goes down and i release all made plugins for 1.6.x but now i have a new forum and have all mods free and paid.
