if the plugin uses templates then you may edit the code in the related templates.
however you may also directly edit the code in the plugin as you are experienced.

It does use templates. The problem is that I can't choose which awards I want to display on the awards page. So I guess I could rewrite it (so you can choose which tab the selected the award should go in, as well settings for the tabs such as .css code). But it seems impossible for me to do it.

^ if you like to edit the templates then this similar work might help (do not include jQuery library again in MyBB 1.8.x)
