Sounds likely, maybe check the settings to see if it will time out after X seconds, or has some sort of limit on outgoing connections?
I could suggest changing title of this topic, since its missleading and may discourage some users from using 1.8.4
...especially while this issue was not even related nor caused by myBB, but perhaps hosting file size limitation or other issues with FTP.

I always have my vpn on (except for right now since In class).
But anyways I will try later without my vpn.
Would definitely recommend turning off your VPN to install. Although it might seem unlikely, your VPN (depending on what you're using), may prohibit you from uploading the files.
Alright tried turning off my vpn and reuploading.
Now it is even more broke o_O
