When I remove a forum, does it delete all the threads and posts, attachments, polls with it too?
Why don't you just make a test forum, post a few times then delete it and see what happens?

All right. I encountered a strange bug where 2 forums were linked together somehow and I deleted one of them and both got deleted, however the second forum contents didn't get totally erased.
